Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
