The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
